Basic Antenna Theory with Antenna Build Workshop

Antennas are the heart of effective radio communication. This class introduces participants to the fundamentals of antenna design and operation, blending theory with practical construction. Whether you’re new to antennas or looking to strengthen your technical foundation, this session will give you the knowledge and confidence to select and build antennas that meet your communication goals.

The class will begin with an introduction to common antenna designs and their applications. We will discuss why antenna polarization matters, and how it affects signal strength and reliability, the mathematical foundations behind dipole and vertical antennas, explained in clear, approachable terms, and how to choose the right antenna based on your communication objectives, environment, and equipment.

This class will include guided construction of a jungle antenna designed for handheld transceivers, with step-by-step instruction and practical tips. All materials will be provided.

This class can be taken in conjunction with the Developing Communications Plans Seminar and the Radio Field Operations Seminar.
