Getting Your GMRS License

During the Season 4 Episode 21 of the Lodestone Training and Consulting podcast we mentioned that we had just signed up for our General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) licenses. I know I teach that there is no test required for the GMRS license, but I now think the test is navigating the FCC website. In this article I am going to try to walk you through the FCC website so you can receive your GMRS license.

To begin the journey into the FCC website we are going to start at https://apps.fcc.gov/coresWeb/publicHome.do , here we will need to register for an FCC Registration Number (FRN). The page we are looking for is shown below in figure 1.

Figure 1

You will need to click "REGISTER" and when you do the page in figure 2 is loaded. GMRS licenses will only be issued individuals so you need to select "An Individual" and select yes if your address is within the United States or its territories. Then click "CONTINUE"

Figure 2

Fill out the form shown in figure 3; be sure to include an email address as several years ago the FCC stopped mailing out licenses via the postal service. Now they issue radio licenses via email. When you are done filling in the required information click "SUBMIT"

Figure 3

Using your newly acquired FRN and Password login at https://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsEntry/licManager/login.jsp shown in figure 4.

Figure 4

Once logged in click "Apply for a New License" at the top left of the menu as shown in figure 5.

Figure 5

In the combo box select "ZA - General Mobile Radio (GMRS)" then click "CONTINUE"

Figure 6

Answer the questions on screen then click "CONTINUE".  Typical responses are all "No"

Figure 7

Fill out the form as shown. Click "CONTINUE"

Figure 8

For paying the $35 license fee go to: https://apps.fcc.gov/cores/paymentFrnLogin.do and login with your FRN

Figure 9

A list of items awaiting payments will be displayed. I have already paid for my license thus nothing is listed. Follow website prompts to complete the $35 dollar payment.
